"Think left and think right and think low and think
high. Oh, the THINKS you can think up if
only you try!" -Dr.Seuss
I reacquainted myself with Dr. Seuss (after more then thirty
years) while reading to my three-year-old. I discovered a profound philosophy embedded
in the volumes by the dear Doctor. Indeed,
don’t the two sentences atop sum up all political, philosophical and religious discourse.
Given some simple extrapolation from the theory of Cognitive Dissonance, it is our self-preserving comfort-craving nature that justifies,
explains and defends our beliefs, whatever they are, regardless of how we came
to them. Soccermomunplugged has a wonderful example.
If this is a core belief of mine (and I am saying it is)
then how can I say anything of value?
If you want to label me a post-modernist or worst, a moral-relativist
(is that a word?) I would be pressed to strongly object. I believe in the rule of “Natural Law”.
Critics will identify “cognitive dissonance” in my writing,
and I will whole heartedly agree. What
can I say; it just seems I’m on the right side of all the issues.
Hmmm, or is it that I have to believe I’m on the right side
of all the issues so my head won’t hurt.
(from extensive personal experience I can testify that cognitive
dissonance will make your head hurt)
You may also find from my posting that I’m not very smart,
not well read, or academic (although Temple
U has given me three little letters to put after my name, but they don’t include a “p”
or an “h”).
I am however, resourceful and capable,
especially when justifying my positions ... or tearing them down.
